Why doesn’t my child pick up their guitar instead of playing on their video game?
Kids at almost any age are now surrounded by iPads, gadgets, and video games that gives them lots of instant gratification.
Lots of parents expect children to self-manage when it comes to their video game usage and have unrealistic expectations of what they will self-control on their own.
Self control, just like anything else, comes with practice and exercising our brain in the right direction.
It comes from the ability to think of long term consequences and being able to weigh that up with the short term activities and consequences.
The area of our brain that controls our own self-control is the pre-frontal cortex. This area of our brain finishes full developing at age of 25. So before then, we are still battling with it to improve self control. And even beyond that, to improve self control still requires constant practice.
What does this have to do with video games?
For children, video games is an artificial simulation that puts their brain into high gear. It is something that humans were not designed to be under for long periods of time. Especially for children.
Video games releases boundless of chemicals, from feeling good dopamine to adrenaline into their system that keeps them excited. To the point that they will skip sleep to carry on playing.
When the game is happening, the blood flow of the brain changes. The blood actually flows away from the pre-frontal cortex towards the back of your brain. Which means your child has less ability to control themselves. And beyond that, their emotions.
Which is why when you stop them from playing the video games, they throw tantrums. It’s because all their sensibilities have gone out the door. They are not able to control their emotions as well. Let alonew think of the long term consequences of playing too many video games. All they can think about is getting the next high, at the next level.
Video games in general
I do recognize that video games do have positive results on the brain. There are lots of studies that prove it. But it is important to consider that young children do not have the capacity to manage themselves.
As parents, it’s important to help encourage them with positive boundaries.
And on top of them, provide activities that improve their self control.
Practicing guitar has a lot of the benefits that come with video games. Such as improving their fine motor skills, and brain development. Even improving their language skills. On top of that, it improves their self control. It takes discipline and hard work to get better at guitar.
Practicing guitar shows them that if they put in effort, they will get a result both the short term. And long term as well. Getting them to think longer term about their musical development.
The more fun, you can make guitar, the easier it will be to help them to want to practise guitar as well.
